A master class on "Solving Genetics Problems Using Elements of Artificial Intelligence"

In the era of globalization and digitalization, modern education system demands are becoming increasingly complex. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have been actively integrated into education. They enable personalized learning, make it interactive, and, most importantly, engage students' thinking. Effective use of AI tools opens up opportunities to simplify complex biological concepts, model practical problems, and gain a deeper understanding of data.In particular, when teaching natural sciences, including genetics, one of the most important issues is developing students' abilities for deep thinking, analysis, and decision-making, beyond theoretical knowledge. Critical thinking and the ability to work with artificial intelligence are therefore key skills that form the foundation for developing students as individuals capable of solving modern scientific and technical problems, analyzing information, and forming their own opinions.

On November 11, 2025, a master class in Kazakh and English on "Solving Genetic Problems Using Artificial Intelligence" was held at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Geography of Makhambet Utemisov West Kazakhstan University. Students from groups BG-31, BG-33, and BP-31 participated, under the supervision of Associate Professor, Candidate of Biological Sciences A.U. Utaubayeva, and N.M. Aimukhanov, a second-year Master's student majoring in Biology (7M01509).Participating in the event were Professor, Doctor PhD Edvard Mizsei (Hungary, University of Debrecen),; Doctor  PhD R.Zh. Kozhagaliyeva, Head of the Educational Program for Training Teachers of Biology, Geography, and Chemistry,; and faculty, Master's students, and fourth-year students majoring in Chemistry-Biology and Biology. The purpose of this master class was to develop skills in analyzing the laws of heredity, effectively solving problems, and using modern digital platforms (Gemini, ChatGPT, Miro, Mentimeter, etc.) in the learning process using elements of artificial intelligence.Genetics is a subject that requires precision, systems thinking, and practice. During the open lesson, students were able to not only simplify problem solving using neural networks but also gain a deeper understanding of the topic, practice with algorithms, and learn to think sequentially. Gemini AI, developed by Google DeepMind, is one of the most powerful and versatile artificial intelligence systems available from Google in 2025. During the lesson, problems on the topic of "Genetic Mapping of Chromosomes" were selected from several English-language genetics textbooks in PDF format using Gemini AI. First, students independently solved problems on a complex aspect of genetics—chromosome mapping—and compared their results with the performance of the versatile AI tool. The Gemini and ChatGPT platforms were also used to analyze and develop algorithms for solving genetic problems. The Miro interactive whiteboard was used to visually demonstrate gene combination, the process of crossing over, and the inheritance of sex-linked traits. Participants also observed genetic processes in online videos and discussed their models.During the lesson, a question-and-answer contest was held in the "Fire Game" format, aimed at developing students' logical thinking and decision-making skills. Furthermore, at the end of the lesson, participants provided feedback via the Mentimeter platform, sharing their impressions of the session. At the conclusion of the event, the international guest, PhD Professor E. Mizsei, praised the event's content, the quality of its delivery, and the students' engagement. According to the international professor, the integration of artificial intelligence tools into the educational process is an effective approach in modern pedagogy.

The vibrant and dynamic masterclass demonstrated the effectiveness of integrating artificial intelligence into the educational process in the field of advanced study of biological sciences. The use of AI elements increased students' interest in the subject and developed their skills in scientific analysis and research. Such digital masterclasses are an important tool for developing the digital literacy of future teachers and biologists.
